3 Hours a Week, 18.9 Billion Rupiah: Inspiring Stories of US Women Who Break the Stereotype of Working Hard

Some people believe that constant hard work is the key to becoming rich. However, in reality, this is not always true. An example that shows this is Jenny Woo’s journey.
Jenny Woo is a Chinese immigrant currently living in the United States. In the beginning, Jenny worked as a communications consultant at Deloitte and Cisco. In her position, she trained managers in communication skills. Although the job paid her well, it was also quite time-consuming.

Eventually, Jenny decided to quit her job and shift her focus to running her own business. In 2018, with a capital of US$ 1,000 or around Rp 16 million, she established a card game business called Mind Brain Emotion. The product is designed to train one’s emotional intelligence. Jenny sells her products through Etsy and Amazon platforms.

In an interview with CNBC Make It, Jenny said that her business has changed her lifestyle. Now, she only works between 3 to 30 hours per week, depending on the situation and needs. Despite working short hours, Jenny’s business is able to generate revenue of up to US$ 1.71 million or around Rp 18.9 billion. Of this amount, 40% or around Rp 760 million is her personal profit.

Interestingly, Jenny does not share the profits with others as she runs her business alone without any employees. Nonetheless, she does not rule out the possibility of hiring others if they have skills that match her business needs.
Jenny also revealed that online business is indeed very competitive, and to succeed, one needs to master various skills such as advertising and SEO. Therefore, she emphasizes the importance of continuous learning in order to become a reliable entrepreneur.
