Disneyland Character Performers Vote to Unionize, Paving the Way for Improved Labor Conditions

In a watershed moment for labor relations at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, the enchanting characters of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy have embraced a historic opportunity to enhance their working conditions and representation.

Following an extensive three-day voting process last week, 1,700 Disneyland Resort cast members entrusted with portraying characters throughout the theme park and participating in parades have made the resounding decision to unionize under the Actors’ Equity Association, announced the union on Saturday night. With a significant majority, 953 cast members voiced their support for unionization, while 258 cast their dissent.

This momentous choice marks the culmination of an organizing effort initiated by the group in February, culminating in a formal vote filed with the National Labor Relations Board in April. Against the backdrop of more than 21,000 Disneyland “cast member” employees already represented by numerous unions across various roles, character performers had long awaited their inclusion in the collective bargaining process.

Kate Shindle, President of Actors’ Equity Association, hailed the significance of this milestone, underscoring the indispensable role character performers play in crafting memorable experiences for guests at the theme park. Shindle pledged the union’s unwavering support in collaborating with the newly unionized workers to address a spectrum of concerns, including health and safety standards, equitable wages, comprehensive benefits, conducive working conditions, and job security.

With the labor relations board poised to certify the results in the imminent week, negotiations between the union and The Walt Disney Company are poised to unfold. Equity expressed optimism in Disney’s willingness to engage constructively, drawing on a history of productive collaboration with the company.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Disneyland Resort conveyed the company’s commitment to respecting the outcome of the unionization vote, refraining from commenting until the election results are officially certified. However, the company affirmed its steadfast dedication to fostering an environment where the voices of cast members are valued and their concerns addressed with diligence.

The move towards unionization among Disneyland’s character performers reflects a broader trend in the entertainment industry, underscoring the importance of collective action in advocating for fair labor practices and ensuring the well-being of workers. As Disneyland’s cherished characters take this pivotal step towards empowerment, the stage is set for a new chapter in the park’s storied history, characterized by solidarity, inclusivity, and mutual respect.
