Iran’s Leader: A Trillion Rupiah Trail of Business and Wealth

Iran carried out a military attack on Israeli territory on Saturday (13/4/2024) by sending more than 100 drones that managed to enter Israeli territory. This attack was in response to Israel’s attack on its consulate in Damascus on April 1, 2024, which left seven Revolutionary Guard officers, including two senior commanders, dead.

One of the central figures in this attack was Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader since 1989. Khamenei is known for his role in politics, military, business and wealth. In 2013, Reuters reported that he was worth US$95 billion or Rp1,530 T through an organization called Setad, which is one of the most powerful organizations in Iran with various business lines that are not widely known to the public.

Setad, established by Ayatollah Khomeini’s will in 1989, originally aimed to manage property and divert profits to help the poor and war veterans. However, under Khamenei’s leadership, the organization developed into a business giant that has stakes in various Iranian industrial sectors.
Although Iran claims that Setad aims to create new conglomerates and contribute to the welfare of the people, the organization lacks clear oversight, so the fate of its profits cannot be ascertained.
