Reykjavik, Iceland — Safety has remained a defining factor in how people evaluate countries for both residence and travel. In 2025, the Global Peace Index (GPI) once again placed Iceland at the top of its list, continuing a dominance it has held since 2008. The rankings, which also highlight Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland, reflect the enduring stability and quality of life in these nations.
The GPI, widely referenced in global policy discussions, measures national peace using indicators such as crime rates, political stability, military activity, and access to healthcare. Countries with lower GPI scores are considered more peaceful and thus more attractive for international visitors, investors, and residents alike.
Iceland secured its top position with a GPI score of 1.095. The absence of violent crime, combined with the fact that the country operates without a standing army, has strengthened its reputation as a model of peace. Citizens enjoy clean air, strong healthcare services, and long life expectancy, all contributing to its continued global recognition.
Ireland followed closely in second place with a score of 1.260. The Irish government has reinforced its commitment to citizen welfare, allocating more than €25 billion in 2025 to enhance healthcare. With low crime rates and a well-managed society, Ireland has positioned itself as both secure and socially supportive.
New Zealand rose to third in 2025, improving its ranking from the previous year. Its score of 1.282 reflects a stable environment marked by robust law enforcement, low violence, and a culture of respect. The country’s reputation as one of Asia-Pacific’s most peaceful destinations has made it especially attractive to families and international tourists.
Austria, scoring 1.294, ranked fourth. Although once higher in the index, the country experienced a minor decline due to increased national spending. Nevertheless, Austria remains a beacon of European stability, offering a secure and harmonious lifestyle for its citizens.
Rounding out the top five is Switzerland, also scoring 1.294, which moved up from sixth place in 2024. The Swiss Confederation continues to embody neutrality, urban cleanliness, and public safety, reinforcing its longstanding identity as a nation of peace and stability.
These rankings not only influence travel and residency decisions but also reflect deeper geopolitical realities. In a world where conflict and uncertainty persist, these five nations showcase how governance, social trust, and responsible policy can sustain environments where safety is not just promised but lived daily.
