Jakarta — A recent TimeOut survey of 18,500 residents across 50 countries has revealed the world’s top ten cities for public transportation, and Asia stands out as the clear leader.
The Top 10 Cities:
- Hong Kong
- Shanghai
- Beijing
- Abu Dhabi
- Taipei
- London
- Vienna
- Seoul
- Mumbai
- Doha
With six of the top ten cities located in Asia, the findings underscore the region’s rapid progress in building efficient, affordable, and reliable transit systems. Hong Kong’s MTR, Shanghai’s vast metro, and Seoul’s integrated rail networks are cited as benchmarks for global urban mobility.
Although Jakarta did not make the top 10, it was recognized among 19 global cities where public transport is considered adequate for residents’ needs. This acknowledgment reflects the Indonesian capital’s ongoing efforts to expand its MRT, LRT, and bus rapid transit systems.
Urban analysts note that Asia’s dominance in the ranking highlights a broader trend: megacities in the region are investing heavily in infrastructure to balance rapid population growth with sustainability goals. Jakarta’s inclusion, even outside the top tier, signals its potential to join the ranks of global leaders in the coming decade.
