Pesantren Award 2025: Honoring Tradition and Modernity in Islamic Education

Jakarta — The Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) has officially launched the first‑ever Pesantren Award 2025, held in conjunction with the commemoration of National Santri Day. The event, hosted in Jakarta, recognized pesantren, santri, and community leaders who have made significant contributions to Islamic education and social development in Indonesia.

Director General of Islamic Education, Amien Suyitno, emphasized that the award is not merely ceremonial but a reflection of pesantren’s enduring role as guardians of tradition, centers of da’wah, and engines of social transformation. “Pesantren Award is an appreciation for the long dedication of pesantren in shaping generations who are knowledgeable, ethical, and competitive,” he stated.

Tradition Meets Modernity

The award highlighted pesantren’s ability to balance traditional Islamic values with the demands of modern society. From character education and community service to digital innovation, pesantren were recognized for their adaptability in addressing contemporary challenges.

Categories and Winners

The awards were divided into multiple categories, including Transformative Pesantren, Inspirational Santri, Innovative Leaders, and Lifetime Achievement. Among the honorees were pesantren that pioneered community‑based economic programs, santri who excelled in science and technology, and leaders who bridged pesantren traditions with national development goals.

Broader Significance

For many observers, the Pesantren Award 2025 represents a milestone in acknowledging pesantren as part of Indonesia’s nation‑building project. By honoring pesantren not only as religious institutions but also as contributors to education, economy, and culture, the award strengthens their position in shaping the country’s future.

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar described the award as a “mirror of pesantren’s contribution to civilization,” underscoring its role in nurturing values of sincerity, modesty, and patriotism.

Looking Ahead

The inaugural Pesantren Award is expected to become an annual tradition, offering a platform to celebrate pesantren’s evolving role in society. It also signals the government’s commitment to ensuring that pesantren remain relevant in the era of modernization, while staying rooted in their spiritual and cultural heritage.
